Tobey Maguire has joined the cast of the dramedy "Labor Day" says Deadline.
Based on author Joyce Maynard's book--the action is set on a late summer Labor Day holiday weekend in the 1980s, the story follows a divorced, depressed single mom Adele (Kate Winslet) out shopping with her 13-year-old son Henry (Gattlin Griffith) when they encounter a large, fearsome and bleeding man named Frank (Josh Brolin). He asks for a ride and against their better judgment they agree, later learning the police are searching their town for an escaped convict.
James Van Der Beek will play a police officer investigating a missing person’s case. Brighid Fleming plays the object of Griffith's affection and a girl with much more awareness of the way the world works than he has.
Maguire will play the adult version of Henry.
Clark Gregg, Tom Lipinski Lucas Hedges, Alexie Gilmore Micah Fowler and Maika Monroe also star.
Jason Reitman will direct using his adapted script, and will co-produce the film with Helen Estabrook Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith.
Production is imminent.
