Now I Lay Me Down

The always great Catherine Zeta-Jones is in talks to join the Stephen Frears-directed comedy-drama "Lay The Favorite"  reports Deadline.

Based on Beth Raymer bestselling memoir , the story charts her rise from lowly Vegas cocktail waitress to one of the top sports gambling bookmakers.

Rebecca Hall has been cast in the lead role.

Zeta-Jones would play the wife of Raymer's mentor, a cantankerous ex–New York bookmaker (Bruce Willis).

D.V. DeVincentis (”High Fidelity,” “Grosse Pointe Blank”) wrote the adapted script

Filming aims to kick off in New Orleans in April.

Professor's Hours

Jared Harris recently talked with MTV News about "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and just how his role as Holmes' arch nemesis Professor Moriarty fits into the film.
Harris says his role is "very much in the shadows" for most of the film and he's not sure if he'll be back for another entry - "I think they're still trying to get this one ready and out there before they start thinking about the next one."

Harris adds that the tone will be faster and more action-oriented than the first film - "There's some fisticuffs. It's great fun. It's sort of like the story kind of starts a lot faster than the last one, almost like you're coming in the third act of the story almost."

The film stars Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Rachel McAdams, and Stephen Fry.

Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes sequel hits theaters later this year on December 16th.

Night Owls

Julianne Moore and Olivia Thirlby have joined the cast of Another Night says The Film Stage.

Based upon Nick Flynn:'s memoir "Another Bulls**t Night in Suck City", the story revolves around the author's experiences as a case worker for the homeless and his relationship with his father. As a teenager, Flynn (Paul Dano) had received letters from his estranged father (Robert De Niro), a delusional con man and self-proclaimed poet.

The memoir follows Flynn and his father, whose self-destructive behavior eventually drives him onto the streets and into the homeless shelter where Flynn works.

Paul Weitz ("About a Boy," "Little Fockers") will direct the film and produce alongside Chris Weitz and Michael Costigan.

High Fiveer

Chris Pratt and Rhys Ifans have joined the cast of Nicholas Stoller's newest comedy "Five-Year Engagement" according to Variety.

Jason Segel and Emily Blunt star in the film which chronicles the highs and lows of a lengthy relationship.

Details regarding Ifans and Pratt's roles are not yet known

Earlier this week Alison Brie was tapped to play Blunt's younger sister.

"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek" scribes Segel and Stoller co-wrote the script.

Judd Apatow, Rodney Rothman and Stoller are producing. Shooting kicks off towards the end of next month.

Mad Bad & Deadly

Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive first look still of Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) in full, Red Skull mode as seen in July 22nd's Captain America: The First Avenger

The photo is so fricking cool!

The Red Skull was once a weapon developer named Johann Schmidt who undergoes an experiment much like Steve Rogers which leaves him hideously disfigured. But that doesn’t stop him and he goes on to create the ultimate weapon, the Cosmic Cube. This glowing cube turns the users dreams or whims into reality.

Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, Dominic Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci and Neal McDonough  also star for helmer Joe Johnston

Outcasts Take Over

This weekend at the movies 4 new wide releases are added to the marquee...

Johnny Depp is Rango (reviews); Matt Damon and the lovely Emily Blunt are being chased by The Adjustment Bureau (reviews); Alex Pettyfer turns from a stud to Beastly (and so are the reviews I might add) for Vanessa Hudgens; And Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler ask their dates to Take Me Home Tonight (reviews)

Pamela McClintock of THR

Will an animated chameleon be the one to chase away the box-office blues? Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount's Rango, voiced by Johnny Depp, is expected to score the best debut of the year when rolling out Friday in 3,917 theaters.

Most believe that Rango -- reteaming Depp with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski -- will gross north of $40 million for the weekend (the pic isn't in 3D). More sophisticated than most toons, the film should draw adults as well as families.

Rango, which cost $135 million to produce, opens day and date in a slew of territories overseas, including the U.K.

About a chameleon who winds up in the Old West, Rango sports a voice cast that also includes Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Timothy Olyphant and Bill Nighy. It is the first animated film made by George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic.

Universal's sci-fi romantic thriller The Adjustment Bureau, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, is likewise tracking well. It opens in 2,840 locations.

Box-office observers think Adjustment Bureau has a good chance of crossing $20 million, although Universal is playing it safe and predicting an opening in the high- to mid-teens, considering how soft the domestic box office has been.

Universal acquired Adjustment Bureau from Media Rights Capital for $62 million and expects the film to be fueled by the same older moviegoers who have turned a number of recent adult-themed films, including True Gritand The King's Speech, into box-office hits.

Universal is comparing Adjustment Bureau to The Time Traveler's Wife, which opened to $18.6 million, and Premonition, which earned $17.6 million in its debut.

Adjustment Bureauwas helmed and written by George Nolfi in his directorial debut and is based on the short story by sci-fi master Philip K. Dick. The film also stars Anthony Mackie and Terence Stamp.

Overseas, Adjustment Bureau opens day and date in 21 countries.

Among holdovers, observers will be tracking The King's Speech to see what kind of bump the Weinstein Co. release gets after winning four Oscars, including best picture.

The two other films opening this weekend -- CBS Films' Beastly and Relativity Media's raunchy R-rated comedy Take Me Home Tonight -- are expected to post much softer openings.

Beastly, a retelling of the classic fairy tale The Beauty and the Beast, stars Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer and is based on the 2007 book by Alex Flinn. Films based on fairy tales are Hollywood's latest obsession, with a number of projects in the works. And on March 11, Warner Bros. opens the Amanda Seyfried starrer Red Riding Hood, directed by Twilight's Catherine Hardwicke.

Beastly, going out in 1,952 theaters, was originally intended to open in July, but its release was shifted twice (in part to piggyback on Pettyfer's I Am Number Four, which opened two weeks ago).

In marketing Beastly, CBS Films has targeted girls ages 11-17. Its exposure on the pic, which cost $17 million to produce, was minimized by selling off foreign rights.

Take Me Home Tonight, previously titled Kids in America, stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer.

Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh inherited the project when acquiring Rogue Pictures from Universal and paid $10 million for distribution rights.

Take Me Home was penned by Jackie and Jeff Filgo (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, That '70s Show)...

John Young of  EW:

With 2011′s box office trailing last year’s by 25 percent, Hollywood is turning yet again to Johnny Depp to save the day.....

3-D Make Not One Great

With the "Star Wars" saga being remastered for 3D, Lucasfilm and Fox have officially announced via THR a February 10th 2012 theatrical release date for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace using the valued format

It's expected only one film a year will be released

Until then at least there's the upcoming Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga hitting stores on September 27th.

Satisfy The Hunger

Earlier today Oscar nominees: Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter's Bone"), Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") and Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine"). were in the running for the lead role in "The Hunger Games" film adaption as reported in Variety.

By the afternoon Entertainment Weekly also added Chloe Moretz, Emma Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Lyndsy Fonseca, Emily Browning, Shailene Woodley, and Kaya Scodelario to the mix

The project is based on the Suzanne Collins novel series which have developed a major following across all ages and is said to potentially be the 'next Twilight'.

The first in a planned trilogy, the story involves a young love triangle playing out against a dystopian future where North America has been divided into twelve oppressed districts, each of which is forced to send tribute in the form of a boy and a girl to compete in a televised battle to the death once a year.

Lawrence was said to be up for the role described as a woman between 15 and 20. The catch is the age of whomever they hire because once the decision has been made, it will affect the audience demographic and more importantly the rest of the film's casting. And the studio suits told EW that  "there are no frontrunners at this point."  Lawrence is 20, Steinfeld and Breslin are 14. Should they cast younger, it will be trickier finding a male lead and of course all three Oscar actresses  have busy schedules.

Collins adapted the screenplay which Billy Ray has re-written. Gary Ross will helm,

Whatever way the casting goes the film is due out March 23rd, 2012.

Oscar '11 Aftermath

Oscar co-host James Franco is a bit miffed to say the least but it's not over all the criticism he took after Sunday's telecast....

THR has the story:

James Franco has sent out his first post-Oscars tweet, and it has nothing to do with his widely panned co-hosting gig.

Instead of responding all to the critics who gave his performance a big thumbs-down, the Yale University grad student sent out a picture that slammed -- of all things -- his campus newspaper, for criticizing hisTwitterpage.

"James Franco, your Twitter sort of sucks," Yale Daily News writer Cokey Cohen wrote in a piece posted Saturday.

Franco joined Twitter just two weeks ago as part of an effort to help modernize the Oscars and draw younger viewers to the telecast.

Cohen argued that, as a celebrity, Franco should be sending out more than "random links to pictures and replies to celebrities."

Wrote Cohen: "The pictures are okay in that a few are of him: candids are a Celebrity Tweeter staple. On the other hand, a lot of them -- like this one -- look like a fourteen-year-old girl with emo bangs and a Tumblr account attacked them with a few of her favorite Photoshop filters."

Cohen also wants to see more "pithy statements" and suggest Franco take a page from Kanye West's book when it comes to Twitter. (West'sTweets have included "I just threw some kazoo on this bi**h.

On Tuesday,Franco tweeted out a picture of himself overlaid with the words "F--- THE YALE DAILY NEWS" in red capital letters.

Cohen's response? In a new post Wednesday, the writer expressed surprise and some doubt that Franco even read the original post, much less took the time out to respond directly to it. But in the event that Franco was targeting Cohen, it's "also possibly the pinnacle of my career as a writer."

Cohen concludes by writing that Franco "ranted in the form of a random picture. #wellplayedsir. ... I'm becoming convinced that James Franco's whole life is a form of postmodern performance art. In that context, his Twitter fits right in."

The nice thing about twitter is that you can make it your own in how you express or share your thoughts. Just because of Franco's celeberty he need not be "on" the whole time nor should we expect him to be--Even in the age of social media...We all can't be as poetic as Mr West or as clever as say Ashton Kutcher is @aplusk...I do find it odd though that Franco is this upset over one person's opinion about his Twitter feed...seems unwarrented

I'd be interested in hearing what you my readers think about this...@

Turning to the other Post-Oscar story...

In overnight Ratings the show drew a 24.6 household rating/37 share, down 7% from last year's 26.5 rating and reversing a ratings upswing over the past two years for the awards show after its all time low in 2008. The expected bump from the younger hosts didn't pan out with the ad-targeted 18-49 demographic on par with last year’s 14.5 rating.

Still Academy President Tom Sherak Defends Oscar Hosts Broadcast in THR

"You can say we failed," he tells the current issue of the trade magazine. "I'd say we still got 38 million people." ....

Place Runner

Alcon Entertainment is in final discussions to secure film, television and ancillary franchise rights so they can create prequels and sequels to Ridley Scott's classic 1982 sci-fi film Blade Runner says THR

The film was based upon author Philip K. Dick's story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

The pact would mark the Warner Bros. based subsidiary financing and production company's most significant property acquisition in its thirteen year history. The franchise rights would be all-inclusive, aside from one very specific exclusion - they do NOT have the right to remake the original.

They can however produce projects based on situations introduced in the film, namely other stories set in that universe and using elements such as Replicants, Blade Runners and the Tyrell Corporation.

Bud Yorkin  Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove would produce any projects that emerge from this deal.

WB would distribute domestically, international rights have yet to be determined.

Not quite sure whether I like this idea or not--no matter what form it takes.

R U Ready To Die?

The Motion Picture Association of America has given the long awaited horror sequel Scream 4 an R-rating for "strong bloody violence, language and some teen drinking".

The previous three films in the series were all rated R

You may remember the first Scream earned its R after submission to the MPAA saw that it was initially granted an NC-17.

Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Britt Robertson, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Nico Tortorella, Mary McDonnell, Alison Brie, Anthony Anderson, Aimee Teegarden, and Marielle Jaffe star along with confirmed cameos by Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Shenae Grimes, and Lucy Hale.

Written by film series mastermind Kevin Williamson and once agian directed by Wes Craven the film hits theaters on April 15th.

Relationships Are A Brie-ze

TV star Alison Brie is joining the relationship pic "Five-Year Engagement" says Variety.

The film will follow the ups and downs of the relationship between a couple (Emily Blunt and Jason Segel).

Brie will portray the younger sister to Emily Blunt's character.

Nicholas Stoller directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Segel.

Judd Apatow, Rodney Rothman and Stoller are producing and shooting aims to kick off around the end of April.

Fire In The Belly

Sienna Miller (The Edge of Love) has signed on to star in indie-drama Just Like A Woman says Deadline.

Miller plays a Chicago housewife who runs off to Las Vegas with her belly-dancing teacher to join a dance competition.

Golshifteh Farahani and Roschdy Zem co-star.

Miller took the role without reading the script just for the opportunity to work with Bouchareb whose Algerian film Above the Law was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Miller said of her future director:

“Rachid is one of the most exciting directors working today [...] He’s one of those people who understand the medium of film in a way that’s not manipulative but that’s honest and raw. As a director he’s capable of anything. The kinds of films he makes are the ones I like to watch.”

Shooting kicks off in New Mexico on June 13th.

Watch Man

Jake Gyllenhaal is in early discussions to star in the cop drama "End of Watch" says Variety.

The story is described as a gritty cop drama that follows the friendship between longtime partners.

David Ayer ("Harsh Times," "Street Kings") is set to write and direct

Ayer and John Lesher will produce. The pic is currently seeking backers.

Lane Is A Kent

Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in Superman: Man of Steel  says The Hollywood Reporter.

Of the casting dirctor Zack Snyder states, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Lane will star opposite Henry Cavill, who plays  Clark Kent/Superman

Lane is only the second official piece of confirmed casting in reboot

Been a fan of Lane since I first saw her when I was a  teenager in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders , right up through Unfaithful (which garnered her a Best Actress Oscar nomination), and beyond

At last report Kevin Costner playing Pa Kent and Viggo Mortensen as Zod but no serious movement has happened since then. Mortensen's deal for "Snow White and the Huntsman" is looking to be a done deal which would rule him out for "Superman" due to conflicting shooting schedules.

David S. Goyer is writing the screenplay based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Nolan and Deborah Snyder are producers on the film that is scheduled for a December 2012 release

Mr Roboto

Brazilian director José Padilha is in negotiations to direct the remake of  Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi classic Robocop, reports Deadline.

Set in a crime-ridden futuristic Detroit, the original film told of a mortally wounded law officer becomes part of a corporate experiment in which his remains are encased in a robotic suit and unleashed on the city's felons.

MGM has been developing the remake for several years with Black Swan's Darren Aronofsky ready to call action. Progress on the flick stopped dead due to MGM's financial problems and Aronofsky moved on.

Now with the studio on a new path Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, want the project as its first major franchise re-launch.

I still say we don't need a Robo remake now but the studio needs $

The news comes a week after a group raises $50,000 for RoboCop statue in Detroit

Oh Mercy Percy

Despite modest box-office, and critical ambivalence at best development on a sequel to last year's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief reports The Los Angeles Times.

Based on Rick Riordan's five-book young adult novel series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski ("Ed Wood," "Agent Cody Banks") have been hired to adapt the second novel The Sea of Monsters

The first first film introduced the world to an ordinary boy who learns he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon and many elements from ancient Greek mythology still exist today. This second adventure has him and his friends following in the footsteps of Jason and the Argonauts as they head out in search of the mythical Golden Fleece.

Logan Lerman will return as Percy Jackson, and 24 Frames expects the other cast members  Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, and Rosario Dawson to follow suit

Chris Columbus, who helmed the first film, will return but just as producer this time. No new director has yet been set.

Budgeted at a solid $95 million, the the first film underwhelmed domestically with $88 million but made up the difference overseas with $138 million. It also was one of the more decent DVD performers in the U.S. with $35 million in sales in 2010.

I actually thought the first film was pretty good

Moon Rocks

A new Russian poster is here (via IMP Awards) for Gonzalo López-Gallego's April 22nd  found footage sci-fi horror flick Apollo 18

"Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon."

The teaser trailer launch  last week registtered an astounding 4.3 million views in just a few days.

Meantime Executive Producer Bob Weinstein tries to attempt to make audiences believe that new sci-fi movie is actually 'real' found footage.

“People intrinsically know there are secrets being held from us,” explains Weinstein to EW.

“Look at WikiLeaks: There are secrets that are really true to the world. It’s not bogus. We didn’t shoot anything, We found it. Found, baby!”

Okay Bob the audience is made up of total idiots--Cloverfield was real too right? Lame

Sink Or Direct

Actor Jonah Hill is in talks to make his feature film directorial debut on the sci-fi horror project The Kitchen Sink says Deadline New York

Given his age it's doubtful Tatum will play Pan unless some trickery is involved..we'll see

Film producer Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) will oversee the project

Chris Sparling, the writer of the Ryan Reynolds flick Buried, and the upcoming David Brooks thriller 'Atm' will make his directorial debut on this one from his own script.

What?… Sounds a lot like "Paranormal Activity" does it not? Maybe Sparling can put a fresh spin on it?

BIG Brother

Empire Magazine (via TFW2005) has our first look at 'Sentinel Prime', the autobot described as a "big brother and mentor to Optimus Prime" in Michael Bay's upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon

The article details new story elements: there won’t be an army battle in this entry, though as seen in the trailers there will be a major face-off in Chicago between the Decepticons and Autobots with a few humans using gliders to help the Autobots.

Starscream and Shockwave will get new companions, there's a Ferrari Decepticon called Dreadbox, and when the robots die in the sequel they really die.

Finally, a post on Topless Robot indicates there's a NASCAR transformer named Topspin whose bipedal form sports a mullet.

The film opens July 1st

Disposable People

Recent Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg, Best supporting acress winner Melissa Leo and  Tracy Morgan are all set to join the indie comedy "Predisposed" reports Vulture.

The film focuses on the unhealthy relationship between a drug-addicted mother (Leo) and her college-bound son (Eisenberg), set on the day of both his interview at The Juilliard School and her planned arrival in rehab. Adding complications to the matter is that she has no health insurance so she can only be admitted to rehab if she shows up intoxicated.

Morgan will play her drug dealer Sprinkles who has a feud with her, while another major role of a rival dealer has yet to be cast.

The pic is the feature length adaptation of Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner's 2009 short also called Predisposed that starred Leo.

Shooting is scheduled to start this summer.
