Welcome To Philly-Wood!

The city of Philadelphia is one step closer to getting an economic Hollywood Makeover...

A production company that has successfully lured Hollywood productions to New Mexico has proposed building a movie and television studio in the Philadelphia area, officials said Tuesday.

Three sites are under consideration for the entertainment complex being planned by Pacifica Ventures, a project that could eventually create several thousand jobs, said Hal Katersky, a managing director of the company.

The announcement comes about a month after state lawmakers approved $75 million in film tax credits for the fiscal year that started July 1. Governor Edward Rendell said at the news conference that he is trying to put together a $10 million incentive package for the Pacifica Ventures studio.

"It proves that incentives do, in fact, work," Katersky said at a news conference Tuesday.

Katersky said the company hopes to have a site selected by fall - properties in Bucks County, Delaware County and Philadelphia are being considered - and a grand opening a year later.

Pacifica Ventures, which is based in Santa Monica, Calif., already has established Albuquerque Studios in New Mexico.

How cool is that? A movie studio complex in my own backyard! Some great flicks have used the city as a backdrop: The Rocky movie series. the 1981 thriller Blow Out, M. Night Shyamalan'sThe Sixth Sense, Unbreakable as well as current flick The Happening; And of course the Oscar winning Philadelphia and the sports biopic Invincible...If the deal goes through...There's no excuse for all of those talented local guys I know, who want a career in film, to sit on the sidelines any more...Stay Tuned...
