David Cronenberg is in negotiations to call action on the film adaptation of Robert Ludlum's political thriller "The Matarese Circle reports Variety:

In the book, two rival intelligence agents -- one American, one Soviet -- find themselves working together to expose and vanquish members of a mysterious group of criminals called the Matarese that has infiltrated the world's governments.

Denzel Washington is attached to play the American agent.

Michael Brandt and Derek Haas adapted the script

Cronenberg's enjoying a bit of recent success, thanks to the acclaimed A History of Violence and Eastern Promises-but this pic would mark his first big budget franchise starter.
