ID Issues

At a press event for his November 12rh end of days disaster pic "2012" this past weekend in Colorado, director Roland Emmerich was asked why there's been no sequel to his 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day".

Emmerich tells Latino Review that a story has already been planned, "a very really good great story, a very cool one".

As it turns out Will Smith's paycheck for the pic is what has the studio's wad in a bunch.

Emmerich says he and Producer Dean Devlin want to make the sequel and star Will Smith also "wants to do it in some sort of a package they [Fox] can live with."

Smith's salary gives him a percentage of the film's gross--this has Fox wanting to do the film without the costly yet profitable superstar..

Emmerich is adamant that "Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too."

The result?

"it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting... we’ll see what happens. I would love to do it."

Without Smith the sequel would suck big tine--I say Give Will whatever he wants or scrap the idea entirely...
