Hugh Laurie Leading “Mr. Pip”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Business blog relays that Hugh Laurie of House fame will star in an adaptation of Lloyd Jones’ best-selling novel Mr. Pip as the titular character. The novel “tells the story of the last white man left on the war-torn island of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, who reopens a school and reads his favorite novel, Great Expectations, to the students, inspiring a gifted 14-year-old named Matilda.”

It sounds like hokey Hallmark Hall of Fame melodrama, but even the most saccharine material doesn’t always make for cinematic trouble. There are rare occasions that – when done right – melodrama can be heartwarming. Now excuse me as I revolt from using the word “heartwarming.”

I kid, but let’s cross our fingers that this film doesn’t get too sentimental. How do you feel about this news?
