There's a battle in the land of Oz...
It seems Disney and director Sam Raimi are at odds over who should play a key role -that of an elder witch in The Wizard of Oz prequel Oz: The Great and Powerful says Vulture
The story has The Wizard (James Franco) as a “snake-oil salesman” who enters the Technicolor world of Oz after escaping the vengeful husband of his latest sexual conquest. Once in Oz, he lies to the natives, claiming to be a wizard. This deceitful Casanova soon falls for Glinda the Good Witch, and spurns Theodora (Mila Kunis) prompting her to becomes a bad witch and team up with the downright evil Evanora to destroy Oz
According to the site Raimi wants to reunite with Oscar winner Hilary Swank for the role (they previously worked together on The Gift), but Disney is demanding that Michelle Williams to play the part. The site recounts that Raimi is usually very determined when it comes to casting...Think back to the first Spider-Man flick, the studio wanted him to cast American Beauty star Wes Bentley as Peter Parker but Sam fought for Tobey Maguire
Both ladies would make fine Witches This one is a tough call but in the end the pic benefits from whoever gets to inhabit the part
They also report that Raimi wanted to cast John C. Reilly was in talks for a sidekick role in Oz as well, but talks have stalled. It is believed he will be offered a role in The Hunger Games as Haymitch Abernathy.
Oz is written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire, and will be produced by Joe Roth.
