The company's co-chairman Amy Pascal used the term 'new heroes' when talking about the future. The recent trailer pretty much confirms that The Sinister Six would be a part of either The Amazing Spider-Man 3 or The Amazing Spider-Man 4, and has already boosted talk of a potential "Venom" movie.
Current star Andrew Garfield says that he may not be along for the entire ride.
He tells Yahoo UK:
"I'm under contract for another one after this... as far as a fourth one... that's not anything to do with me. I think what we're doing here [with "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"] is we've established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world. Use our imagination, and kind of expand. That's what this film is."
He also admits the reboot "The Amazing Spider-Man" had some faults, mostly to do with the awkward juggling of elements:
"I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn't on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air - How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through."
He's got high hopes for the sequel, admitting to crying when the film's writers pitched part two to him - "I was really emotionally moved by what they said to me".
The film's director Marc Webb is glad the origin story elements are behind him:
"You know the first time we had to deal with the origin story which was fun, but tricky. This time around the flood gates opened for all of us. We got to explore things that just hadn't been explored cinematically before. Whether it's Electro (Jamie Foxx) you know, or more the story with Gwen.(Emma Stone)"
Webb is not thinking ahead to a fourth film yet, in fact he seemed as surprised as everyone else by the news:
"We did think about these movies from the very beginning as a series of movies… Really a trilogy, to be totally frank"
