Former "Breaking Bad" co-star Aaron Paul told AICN, that he's under consideration to join the long proposed adaptation of Stephen King's opus "The Dark Tower" as Eddie Dean, a character introduced in the second book:
"I've had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of [Breaking Bad[, which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They're definitely planning on making it. I'm excited. Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting. From what I hear, Eddie Dean is a pretty epic, iconic character."
In the novels, Dean is a drug-addicted New Yorker who gets pulled into the world of The Dark Tower where he joins Deschain's quest.
Previously the plan was to tell the epic tale over the course of three films bridged by two limited-run TV seasons. Javier Bardem was lined up as the lead when the ambitious project was at Universal Pictures. Following a budget meltdown Warner Bros picked up Akiva Goldsman’s script for the first film--with Russell Crowe rumored to play Roland Deschain. WB passed on the option to make the TV/film adaptation.
Goldsman, King and Brian Grazer would produce.
King’s Dark Tower novels have a adult edge that, if done faithfully, would no doubt get an R-rating--eliminating a huge chunk of the audience
Watering down the violence in the stories might guarantee a more commercial-friendly PG-13 rating, but would surely draw the ire of the devotees of the books, who would be the films’ core audience
The status of the project remains unclear.
