THR reports that Johnny Depp is in negotiations to star in the "The Secret Life of Houdini"
An adaptation of William Kalush and Larry Sloman's 2006 biography of famed illusionist, Harry Houdini which posited that he acted as a spy for Britain and was asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II in
prerevolutionary Russia. The book also portrayed the master escape
artist and magician as a debunker of con artists who pretended to be
spiritualists, leading to the controversial theory that Houdini's death
was caused by the spiritual movement as payback.

The film hopes to be a period action thriller tentpole ala Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes
Gary Ross ("The Hunger Games") was previously due to call action here, but has since moved on. Dean Parisot takes over.
Christi Dembrowski, Frank Marshall and Bruce Cohen will produce.
Production is slated to begin in November which would indicate that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales might be pushed back until early 2015.
