Universal Pictures has pushed the release date of the latest as yet Untitled Jason Bourne Sequel by almost a full year.
Originally slated for an August 14th 2015 release, the pic is now set to open eleven months later - on July 15th 2016..
Anthony Peckham ("Sherlock Holmes," "Invictus")
had been hired to write an earlier script for the film that continues
the story of the Aaron Cross character introduced in 2012's "The Bourne Legacy" and played by Jeremy Renner, Andrew Baldwin was recently hired to take over the job of scripting the sequel
'Legacy featured Cross as a member of the black ops
program Operation Outcome whose agents are genetically enhanced.
Bourne's actions as chronicled in 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum
force the public exposure of Outcome's earlier incarnations -
Treadstone and Blackbriar - Cross goes on the run as the agency races to
shut Outcome down and kill its agents.
The pic grossed $276 million worldwide.
Former Fast and the Furious film franchise director Justin Lin is poised to helm the latest film in the Bourne film series
No reason was given for the delay, but Renner is set to reprise his role of William Brandt in the action sequel Mission: Impossible 5 shooting later this year/early next year, thus a delay for "Bourne" isn't a major shock.
The suits did mot waste any time finding a replacement though, putting the music biopic "Straight Outta Compton" into that slot.
Ben Smith Jeffrey M. Weiner Lin, and Frank Marshall will produce the next film.
