The film is based on “Tetra Vaal” a short film about a robot with the emotions and brain of a child on the police force patrolling the slums of South Africa.
Sharlto Copley would play the police robot while Dev Patel will play a man in the impoverished town.
Eugene Khumbanyiwa Hugh Jackman Sigourney Weaver and Elysium’s Jose Pablo Cantillo also star.
Described as a science fiction comedy, Chappie is based on an original concept thought up by Blomkamp and his wife, District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell.
Simon Kinberg is producing the film.
