Speaking Confidentially

The Academy Award winning, 1997 film version of James Ellroy's crime novel, L.A. Confidential is one of the best of its kind..

Now, word is out there, that a sequel to the film may be in the works.

Wait...I thought White Jazz was already in the pipeline

Stax of IGN has the story via TMZ.com--trying to sort out the confusion:

Well, that's how director Joe Carnahan has been informally referring to his forthcoming adaptation of James Ellroy's White Jazz, but that's not the project we mean.

Say What?

No, this would be a direct sequel to Curtis Hanson's 1997 neo-noir based on James Ellroy's novel. Hanson and Brian Helgeland share an Oscar for their screenplay adaptation of Ellroy's book.

Now TMZ.com
claims not only are Hanson and Helgeland said to be in talks with Regency Enterprises about the project, overtures have reportedly been made to Confidential stars Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce to reprise their roles as well. There's no word if Kim Basinger, who won an Oscar for her role in Confidential, might return. It should be stressed, though, that no deals have been made yet.

"Insiders tell TMZ that the Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland sequel being discussed wouldn't rely on the plot of White Jazz, but simply pick up where L.A. Confidential left off: With Lt. Ed Exley (...Pearce), a rising star in the LAPD, and Officer Bud White (...Crowe), now an ex-cop who lives with an ex-whore."

Pearce has been pursued for the role of Exley in Carnahan's White Jazz, but has not exactly been over eager about reprising the role. Pearce advised IGN during the recent press day for First Snow that, while the door isn't closed on that possibility, "it is swinging in the wind."

For the direct sequel to work, the script has to be top flight, for all original parties to want in on this...Meanwhile, the White Jazz project seems to waiting to start its engines...I will be waiting for something "official" either way at some point--Before getting too excited about all of this stuff.

Don't feel bad if author Ellroy is shut out of the direct sequel though--he's been keeping very busy of late...doing his own thing.
