The story is based on the true tale of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th century Japan.
The film will tell a stylized version of the story that will mix fantasy elements and gritty battles.
Reeves plays one of the swordsmen.
Shooting begins next year after a director is found. Chris Morgan will write the script.
Reeves does Kill Bill-style epic...He can always learn swordplay from Uma Thurman.
