Director Edward Zwick has set "In the Heart of the Sea" for his next film says Variety.
Based on Nathaniel Philbrick's true life book In the Heart of the Sea, it follows the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex, which was stalked and ultimately destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820.
Stranded thousands of miles from home, the crew struggled to survive; they were lost at sea for 90 days. Eight were rescued. The incident was the inspiration for Herman Melville's classic book"Moby Dick ."
Zwick co-wrote the script with Marshall Herskovitz.
Grand Epic Period Tales are a Zwick trademark.
Production begins later this year.
