Montana's Moolah

Miley Cyrus' and her alter ego's Hannah Montana: The Movie beat the boys of Fast & Furious--But after its 2nd weekend in release the hot rods still have reason to be reved....

Pamela McClintock of Variety:

Disney’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie” scored the second-best Easter weekend opening ever, grossing an estimated $34 million from 3,118 theaters.

“Fast & Furious” may not have won the domestic race, but it raced to the top of the international box office chart. More impressive, the film jumped the $200 million mark at the worldwide B.O. in 10 days.

Strength of the opening of "Hannah Montana" far surpassed expectations, and bolsters Miley Cyrus’ star status. It’s the biggest April bow in Disney history, while it’s Friday gross -- $17.3 million -- is the best opening day showing in history for a live-action G-rated pic.

Peter Chelsom directed the pic, which also stars Billy Ray Cyrus, Jason Earles and Emily Osment.

Nearly all of Hollywood had expected Universal holdover “Fast & Furious” to win the weekend, based on its $71 million debut the week before.

Domestically, film declined 59% to $28.2 million for a cume of $118 million in its first 10 days. Overseas, it grossed a sizeable $46.5 million from 5,118 runs in 50 territories for a cume of $91 million.

Warner Bros.’ Seth Rogen starrer “Observe and Report” came in on the lower end of expectations, opening to $11.1 million from 2,727 runs. The third new opener, 20th Century Fox’s “Dragonball: Evolution” grossed $4.7 million from 2,181 runs, in line with the studio’s modest expectations....
