Tony Giglio has been hired to write the script set before the events of the first film and explores how the deadly prison race got started
In the first film Jason Statham played a wrongly imprisoned racing champion who competes in several televised brutal prison races to win his freedom.
The characters played by Ian McShane and the icy prison warden in Joan Allen could return while the original 'Frankenstein', whom Statham's character impersonates, could be the major character as he was in Paul Bartel's original 1975 cult classic "Death Race 2000".
Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the '08 movie, will also oversee development of the script.
Did the '08 film generate that much buzz to warrant a sequel?
