Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" scored the biggest opening for an animated film debuting nationwide in December, grossing an estimated $25 million from 3,434 locations to top the domestic box office.
Warner Bros. took No. 2 and No. 3 with holdover "The Blind Side" and new entry "Invictus," respectively.
The latest film from prolific director Clint Eastwood, "Invictus" grossed a solid $9.1 million from 2,125 locations. The film, profiling Nelson Mandela's effort to use the 1995 Rugby World Cup to unify his country, stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.
Eastwood's films historically see modest openings, but enjoy particularly strong legs.
Blind Side" continued to show plenty of muscle, grossing an estimated $15.5 million from 3,388 locations for a cume of $150.2 million in its fourth sesh.
On the specialty side, Paramount and DreamWorks saw a strong limited bow for Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones," which grossed an estimated $116,000 from three locations for a per location average of $38,666.
Paramount's George Clooney starrer "Up in the Air" continued to impress as it expanded to 72 locations, grossing an estimated $2.5 million for a per location average of $34,722 and cume of $4.1 million in its second weekend.
Up in the Air" is pacing with Eastwood's "Gran Torino," which grossed $2.3 million nearly a year ago as it expanded to 84 theaters.
The Weinstein Co.'s "A Single Man," marking the directorial debut of fashion icon Tom Ford, grossed an estimated $216,328 from nine theaters in its debut for a per location average of $24,306.
