In the comics Hammond is a pathologist and son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father's eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor.
I hope this means that Sinestro, another member of the interstellar GL Corps and a potential villain is being saved for future franchise installments--rather than being shoehorned into the film. Jackie Earle Haley was rumored for the part.
