Estrogen Anyone

In an an interview with The Herald-Sun, The Avengers director Joss Whedon promises that Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow from Iron Man 2 won't be the only major female role in the super hero team pic

"It is true that the movie is only going to have one female avenger, but she will not be the only female character" says Whedon.

This has led to speculation that puts Alice Eve in a minor villainess role to the appearance of some of the stand alone character love interests like Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), or a recast Betty Ross from The Incredible Hulk,.

It has been confirmed that Natalie Portman's Thor character won't be in the pic while Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter from "Captain America: The First Avenger " is a 1940's-era love interest in that film and thus not around in the present day.

In terms of the plot, Whedon says "It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man. You really have to cull from the original and The Ultimates, which is one of The Avengers titles."
