To Boldly Write

Speaking to The Los Angeles Times "Star Trek" 2009 writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman say that they've finally "broken the story" for the sequel

The film is a standalone sequel, no 'second part' of a trilogy...

Orci says "I don't know that we've ever thought of it in terms of a trilogy... if you were thinking of this movie as a second act, yeah, you would think of it as an "The Empire Strikes Back" sort of story, but I'm not sure we're thinking of it as a second act."

Orci states that despite there being more pressure now that the reboot is a success, in some ways this one is a bit easier to work on:

"Whereas the last movie was all about breaking free from “Star Trek” and its canon, now that we can do whatever we want, we still want it to feel like good ol’ “Star Trek” even though it’s a new story."

All Together Now

The new script will have plenty of key character moments - "We spend a lot of time talking about how — now that everyone is together — they all need really clear, defined moments. Moments that are specific to their characters, specific to way they interact with each other and also build on the dynamic of those amazing, amazing actors."

The scribes seem to also indicate that J.J. Abrams will indeed be back in the Big Chair to direct...!!
