Sal is based on Michael Gregg Michaud's biography which details the actor's rise to fame, his conflicted sexuality and friendships with his "Rebel" co-stars James Dean and Natalie Wood, as well as his 1976 murder at the hands of a deranged pizza deliveryman.
Franco wrote the adapted screenplay and will direct.
Lauren had this to say about the role:
"Sal Mineo himself was an extraordinary and super complex guy. People know him for Rebel Without a Cause, but he was technically the first actor who came out of the closet. He was very brave."
The film will shoot this summer before Franco starts work on Oz: The Great and Powerful
