Marty, Bill & Leo Bet On The Gambler?

The Departed director Martin Scorsese and screenwriter William Monahan will team up again on a remake of the 1974's "The Gambler" says THR.

The original  pic, written by James Toback ("Fingers") and directed by Karel Reisz, was loosely based on the novel by author Fyodor Dostoyevsky about a young tutor in the employment of a formerly wealthy Russian general. The novella reflects Dostoyevsky's own addiction to roulette, which was in more ways than one the inspiration for the book: Dostoyevsky completed the novella under a strict deadline to pay off gambling debts.

The first film adaptation starred James Caan, as "...'Axel Freed' is a New York City English professor with a gambling addiction that begins to spiral out of control. In the classroom, Freed inspires his college students with his interpretations of classic author Dostoevsky's work. In his personal life, Axel has the affection of the beautiful 'Billie' (Lauren Hutton) and the admiration of his family, including his mother (Jacqueline Brookes)

Scorsese wants his frequent star Leo DiCaprio for the title role

Original "Gambler" producer Irwin Winkler.will do the same for the update
