The reboot bowed on July 3rd, and had the biggest Tuesday opening of all time with just over $35 million.
The pic pulled in an additional $23.4 million, the second-highest daily gross for a film playing on July 4th ("Transformers" still holds that record). On Thursday it made around $16.3 million and estimates now have the film pulling in around $130-140 million in the states by the end of the weekend.
The studio used the film's official Facebook page, to confirm that the movie is just the first in a planned new 'trilogy' : 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents.
"--Richard (Campbell Scott) and Mary (Embeth Davidtz)
Producer Matthew Tolmach mentioned the trilogy possibility on the record to SHH last week, saying
"We knew that it was going to be more than one [installment], and at the very least three. We're going to let this movie tell us what the story is."
Sony hired Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to work on the screenplay for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and it wants it out by May 2nd 2014. Speculation is already high about potential villains from The Chameleon and Norman Osborn to the eventual creation of the Sinister Six---and then there's the After Credits Scene to consider but nothing has been decided on yet.
