Costner Gets 2 Clancy Movies

A couple of weeks ago we learned that Kevin Costner was in talks for a mentor-type role in the Jack Ryan Film Series Untitled Reboot.

The reboot will be the first film in the series not to be based on a specific book by author Tom Clancy, who created the character. The story will nevertheless use elements from the series. In this case the action picks up with Ryan in his pre-analyst days and the launching point of the film being a helicopter crash that nearly killed him when he was a marine - an incident mentioned in the first film The Hunt for Red October in 1991.

Now, Deadline reports that Costner has not only accepted the part--it appears he is poised to be working out a deal that will see the same character appear in writer/director writer Christopher McQuarrie adaptation of Clancy's 1993 novel "Without Remorse". He could also potentially star in his own film as well should the character prove a hit with audiences.

The 1971-set book has John Kelly, a former Navy SEAL Team member returned from the Vietnam War, taking charge of two operations - an official military rescue of POWs, and a personal vendetta against the drug runners who raped, tortured and killed the first woman he became involved with since his wife's death.

The book is a prequel to events in Clancy's other books as Kelly would later become John Clark, the dark supporting character that shows up in several Jack Ryan novels

Tom Hardy is being persued to star as Kelly/Clark.
