Goyer Takes On "Count of Monte Cristo"

"Batman Begins" and "Man of Steel" scripter David Goyer has signed on to direct a new film adaptation of author Alexandre Dumas' classic revenge tale "The Count of Monte Cristo" says THR.

Set in early 19th century France, the tale centers on Edmond Dantes, a young man betrayed and falsely imprisoned. While on a prison island, Dantes meets a fellow inmate who not only educates the man but also points him in the direction of a fortune. When Dantes finally escapes after many years, he re-emerges in Paris society primed to take revenge against the men who took away his love and his freedom.

Michael Robert Johnson ("Pompeii") wrote the script.

Jeremy Bolt ("Resident Evil") will produce the new version.

The film will be set in the period, but have a contemporary feel and edge - essentially trying to adapt Dumas' work in the sane vein of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films
