Over 70 million copies of the five main and eight secondary games from Polyphony Studios have been sold worldwide since the series began in 1997 - the highest selling video game franchise under the PlayStation brand. The sixth is due out later this year.

The pic is seen as a direct rival to the film adaptation of Electronic Arts best-selling video game franchise "Need for Speed" and the film adaptation of Mattel's "Hot Wheels" brand.
