Paramount owned the rights to the franchise throughout the 1980s and for the first eight films in the series. The rights were then sold to New Line Cinema who created the ninth and tenth film along with "Freddy vs. Jason".
Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes rebooted the franchise in 2009 that starred Jared Padalecki and Danielle Panabaker with Warner Bros -owned New Line taking domestic and Paramount taking international rights, but ultimately Warners still owned the franchise. Despite making $91 million worldwide, a sequel to reboot stalled over the tangled rights issues.
This new film will NOT be a sequel to the most recent film but Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who wrote the 2009 reboot and "Freddy vs. Jason", have returned to do the script for the new one, though there's no official word as yet on the casting or storyline--will it use the classic formula of good-looking, horny teenagers dying at the hands of hockey-mask wearing, machete-wielding psycho Jason Voorhees--or will the next chapter be a found footage movie?
Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing the film.
It has a March 13th 2015 release date
