How "Ant-Man" Movie Shaped Marvel's Cinematic Universe

It's hard to believe but Edgar Wright's superhero film "Ant-Man" has been in the pipeline since the the first "Iron Man" film went into production--And then Wright's other films took priority...

In the comics, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) is a scientist who invents a substance that allows him to change his size. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) steals the original Ant-Man Pym's equipment and uses it to commit crimes but ultimately becomes a hero.

As production finally nears its start Marvel suit Kevin Feige tells Empire (via Latino Review) that getting the story locked for  all those years ago has impacted how Marvel has built and established its  Cinematic Universe:

"We changed, frankly some of the MCU to accommodate this version of Ant-Man. Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with Ant-Man, going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for Avengers the first time. It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the Ant-Man story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to Avengers."

Feige explained why Pym wasn't in "The Avengers" or Joss Whedon's superhero team up sequel "The Avengers: Age of Ultron".- saying that it wasn't necessary:

"It was two things – a story Edgar wanted to tell that we’ll see with Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, and now we’re 11 films in, it’s looking at the characters we’ve already introduced who already have the technology and the brains to do... certain things [Laughs].

Feige also teased the appearance of Thanos in "James Gunn's film adaptation of "Guardians Of The Galaxy" saying that they have an actor set, but he's "not sure we want to announce it yet."

Former "Lost" star Evangeline Lilly is in talks to play the female lead. It is unclear who Lilly would play, however the character would appear in more than just this film. Rumors had Rashida Jones and Bryce Dallas Howard up for the part as well.

Though he lost out on a role to Michael Pena, actor Clifton Collins, Jr. he is still in the film. The "Pacific Rim" and "Star Trek" actor, did a cameo as a vegan police officer in Wright's "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," and has reportedly been cast in a unspecified role. Pena's role is thought to be that of a tough Latino character who has a lot of physical action scenes in the movie. Matt Gerald will play a villain, though it's unclear if it's as 'White Power Dave' which he played in  Marvel's 14-minute short film that appeared on the February 25th Blu-ray release of "Thor: The Dark World" called All Hail the King.

Watchmen and The Conjuring star Patrick Wilson also stars in the film, but details of that role are unknown.

Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were both considered for the Lang role, but the latter is now doing an adaptation of author Neil Gaiman's  popular comic book series Sandman, with "Man Of Steel" writer David S. Goyer. Rudd is considered a more natural fit by the suits.

Wright and Joe Cornish co-wrote the script from which Wright calls action.

Production is scheduled to begin shortly in Georgia. Marvel pegged the release date for July 17, 2015
