Let's Be Cops Review: Crime Doesn't Pay...(Off)

As an irregular viewer of TV's New Girl I was already aware how talented and funny Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson are. Therefore, I was kinda looking forward to seeing Let's Be Cops, hoping that their skills would make the leap to the big screen. Sadly--such is not the case.

The story centers on two friends Justin and Ryan (Wayans Jr.and Johnson) who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms, giving their stuck in a rut lives a boost and some fun. However, they run into trouble when they cross a dangerous Russian mobster ().

Early on we discover that Justin has feelings for a waitress/struggling effects make-up artist named Josie () whose skills come in handy for undercover operation mission halfway through the pic. Rob Riggle plays a fellow cop and Andy Garcia plays the boss of the wannabe officers

directed the pic using a script he wrote with .

The chemistry between the two leads is wasted thanks to one of the most uneven scripts written for a comedy in long time. There are some nice laughs in the beginning of the movie--but the deeper we get into the whole Russian mob plot--it's all set up and no pay-off. I kept waiting and wanting to laugh--but rarely did, It's as if Thomas and Greenfield were hoping that the premise was enough to make the film work. Jr. and Johnson are talented and deserved better, Riggle tries to make things better as the third fiddle--but I kept wishing that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum would show up here as their 21 Jump Street franchise characters undercover officers Schmidt and Jenko to help save this movie.
