SPOILERS AHEAD
Gunn recently sat down with Empire to discuss that stinger featuring an appearance by Howard The Duck:
"I think it was some combination of me and the editor Fred Raskin who said, 'Let's put Howard The Duck in there. What if The Collector looks over and sees Howard The Duck sitting there?' And I wrote down the line, 'Whaddya let it lick you like that for? Gross.' Fred and I thought it was hilarious, but we weren't sure that (Head of Marvel Studios) Kevin Feige would go for it. But we told Kevin and Kevin couldn't stop laughing, so that's how it came about."
Does this mean we'll one day get a new "Howard the Duck" movie?
"I'll be honest with you, I was just talking about it with my assistant right now. It's possible Howard could reappear as more of a character in the Marvel Universe. But if people think that's going to lead to a Howard The Duck movie, that's probably not going to happen in the next four years. Who knows after that?"
Onto the sequel..The first film ends with the mystery about the identity of Peter Quill/Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) biological father. Many have speculated who it might be since the film's opening, and Gunn confirms that it isn't J'son of Spartax -as chronicled in the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book:
"There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill's father is between a select two or three of us. That's been part of the plan since the beginning, that's something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu's place in everything made sense and it does, so it's all very specific stuff. It's definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I'll say that much."
Will big, bad Thanos (seen in the post-script of The Avengers--played by Josh Brolin in the Guardians film)--show up in the sequel? From the sounds of it that's not in their plans at the moment:
"He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if he is not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that's for damn sure. There's the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos. I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He's used to his loneliness. He's got some other kids out there. He's got to look after them. Nebula's probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like."
Feige was also asked in a recent interview with IGN UK if Quill's biological father would be the central storyline of the next film:
"I think it is pretty important. I think there's a reason we seeded it at the very end of the film like that. I think that would certainly be part of a next Guardians adventure. Certainly, that would be part of it."
Thanos' daughter Nebula (Karen Gillan) seems to make it out of the film alive, which would indicate they plan to do more with her.
"I would say any character that doesn't overtly perish is certainly fair game to come back. If people know the comic lore, Nebula has a lot of varying different roles to play over the course of a lot of different titles in the comics. We have somebody like Karen, and you have a look that is so weird and so great. I think that's something we'd all like to see again."
And then there's the talk of when The Avengers and the Guardians will team-up. Feige is keeping his answers vague:
"You know, the fun about The Avengers, as we we're gearing up to that, was 'how would Tony Stark deal with goody two-shoes Steve Rogers in World War II?' What would Tony Stark think of a Norse god who wields a hammer? The brilliance of Joss [Whedon] was having fun with that. So who knows if and when these guys would ever connect, but it is fun thinking about, how would Steve Rogers react to Rocket? Or, you're right, Drax couldn't even have a conversation with Tony Stark! [Laughs] I have a theory that the more time Drax spends with Peter Quill, the more he's going to start to learn, perhaps, that people aren't always as literal as his species would assume."
Lastly acting great Glenn Close is obviously having a ball with her small role as the Nova Corps chief in "Guardins". In a recent interview with USA Today, the actress spoke about how much she enjoyed working on the film.
"It reminded me of the original Star Wars in that it introduced this great cast but it also had this offhand 'We don't take ourselves so seriously' aspect of it. You don't only get introduced into this wonderful world that has a look all unto its own, but the characters make you laugh. You feel some sort of empathy toward them, and people love that and want it."
Close says that since she is known as a to her many serious actress she is not offered fun roles like Nova Prime often therefore she jumps at the chance to play lighter roles when they come around:
"I just have to let people know that I always have been up for anything. I love to do stuff that's different. That's what I love."
Close loves her character's crazy hair:
"It's so out there, I don't know if people will like this one, but it's really great. Now I've really bought into it. This is a great sculpture, a whimsy on my head. I like to think that Nova Prime has that in her, and hopefully we'll be able to see that in the future."
Asked about the potential for her to reprise her role, she says:
"When you play a character who they love and are amused by, hopefully they'll see more of you. Especially at this point in my career, it's fantastic. To be in the beginning of literally a whole new universe for people is really fun."
"Guardins 2" is set for release on July 28th 2017
