Star Wars Spin-Off #1 Loses Scribe

Gary Whitta is no longer writing Star Wars spin-off #1  directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards says Heat Vision.

A while back chatter suggested the film will feature a team of bounty hunters and include a young Han Solo and his wookie co-pilot Chewbacca. Then more noise came that suggested the spinoff will focus on a team of bounty hunters hired by the Rebels to steal the plans of the first Death Star, as a result viewers would see the Millennium Falcon in action during the movie.

Sources for Bad Ass Digest now say that the film "is about a group of 'pirates' as opposed to 'bounty hunters,' which could easily include young Mr. Solo." So rather than focusing on a group of characters like those we saw in "The Empire Strikes Back," we'd follow a team of likable rogues akin to James Gunn's film adaptation of Marvel 's Guardians of the Galaxy"

No plot details have been officially disclosed yet. Disney/Lucasfilm did not comment on the hiring of a new writer. Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul is rumored to star in the film. His role in the film was not specified. The actor used Twitter to deny the rumor:

Whitta and the film's director Edwards completed a first draft of the script, but Whitta has now moved on to his next project.

In a statement, Edwards says: "Gary has been a wonderful, inspired contributor and I enjoyed working with him tremendously. I'm so grateful for all of his contributions."

Whitta adds: "The year I spent working with Lucasfilm on this Star Wars film has been by far the most rewarding period of my entire career. As a lifelong Star Wars fan I’m deeply grateful to have had the rare opportunity to contribute to a new chapter in its ongoing cinematic legacy. The film is going to be amazing."

That next project Whitta is working on is unclear at the moment, but he is linked to  the film adaptation of "Wanted" and "Kick-Ass" comics author Mark Millar's "Starlight".

Disney/Lucasfilm did not comment on the hiring of a new writer.

The change is not unprecedented--Oscar winner Michael Arndt ("Toy Story 3," "Little Miss Sunshine") vacated his job--after disagreements over which characters the film will focus on in J J. Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" for a year before leaving the project. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over the script in that case.

Production on the project is expected to get underway at Pinewood Studio sometime in 2015, likely after the currently shooting James Bond film "Spectre" wraps. It is currently targeting a late 2016 release.
