Uno And Juno

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets is the top film, yet again, but it's the third place finisher-indie flick Juno that's making all the news...

Pamela McClintock of Variety writes in 'National Treasure' remains on top:

Strengthening its position as a cross-over hit, Fox Searchlight’s specialty pic “Juno” did boffo business over the weekend as it more than held its own against big studio titles and moved up the box office chart to No. 3.

Theater traffic remained strong over the frame, with Warner Bros.’ horror entry “One Missed Call”--the only new wide release of the weekend--outpacing all expectations with an estimated gross of $13.5 million, which put it at No. 5.

“Juno” grossed an estimated $16.2 million as it expanded to 1,952 theaters in its fifth frame for a cume of $52 million, putting it on track to become one of the highest grossing specialty titles ever.

Quirky dramedy came in behind Disney sequel “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” which led the box office for the third weekend in a row, and Warner Bros.’s holdover sci-fi actioner “I Am Legend.”

“Book of Secrets” declined 43% in its third frame to an estimated $20.2 million from 3,762 runs for a cume of $171 million, according to Rentrak. Franchise installment is already outshining the original “National Treasure,” which posted a final domestic gross of $173 million.

Warner Bros.’ Will Smith starrer “I Am Legend” edged out “Juno” for the No. 2 spot, declining 40% in its fourth frame to an estimated $16.4 million for a cume of $228.7 million

Placing No. 4 for the frame was 20th Century Fox’s surprise hit “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” which declined 45% in its fourth frame to an estimated $16 million for a cume of $176.7 million.

Universal’s Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts topliner “Charlie Wilson’s War” came in No. 6 in its third frame, declining a slim 32% to an estimated $8.2 million from 2,594 runs for a healthy cume of $52.6 million.

Warners’ Hilary Swank-Gerard Butler romancer “P.S. I Love You” took the No. 7 spot, declining just 14% to an estimated $8 million from 2,471 theaters for a cume of $39.4million in the pic’s third frame.

Coming in No. 8 was Sony and Walden Media’s kid fantasy film “Water Horse: Legend of the Deep,” which declined 31% in its second weekend to an estimated $6.3 million from 2,777 runs for a cume of $30.9 million.

DreamWorks-Paramount’s Johnny Depp musical adaptation “Sweeney Todd,” directed by Tim Burton, hung in at No. 9. Film declined 34% to an estimated $5.4 million from 1,249 runs for a cume of $38.5 million in its third frame.

Focus Features’ specialty title “Atonement” came in No. 10, a notable feat considering the film is only playing in 583 theaters. James McAvoy-Keira Knightley starrer grossed an estimated $5.1 million for a cume of $19.2 million in the its fifth weekend in limited release...
