Now that 20-year-old Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter's Bone"), has inked a deal for the coveted lead role in "The Hunger Games" film adaptation--fans of the story react...
The project is based on the Suzanne Collins novel series which have developed a major following across all ages and is said to potentially be the 'next Twilight'.
Lawrence will play the female lead of Katniss Everdeen, a character described as "having long, black hair, usually in a braid, gray eyes, and olive skin"-- reaction to to news proved mixed.
The film's director Gary Ross, Collins, and even Lawrence tried to assure fans....
Ross tells EW that "I talked to Suzanne extensively about this. Suzanne saw every single audition. And not only did Suzanne not have an issue with Jen’s age, she felt you need someone of a certain maturity and power to be Katniss... Suzanne was incredibly adamant about this. Far from being too old, she was very concerned that we would cast someone who was too young. In Suzanne’s mind, and in mine, Katniss is not a young girl. It’s important for her to be a young woman."
Collins added in a statement that "Jennifer's just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can't wait for everyone to see her play it."
Lawrence says "I have a huge responsibility to the fans of this incredible book and I don’t take it lightly".
Never read the book--but am a big fan of Lawrence--for all those worried about it--I think she'll do fine. Remember all the uproar over Robert Pattinson for Twilight and look how that turned out...Relax
The story involves a young love triangle playing out against a dystopian future where North America has been divided into twelve oppressed districts, each of which is forced to send tribute in the form of a boy and a girl to compete in a televised battle to the death once a year.
Hunter Parrish (below), Alex Pettyfer and Josh Hutcherson have been mentioned as contenders for the male lead with Parrish having the edge right now
Collins adapted her own book into script form which Billy Ray has re-written.
The film is due out March 23rd, 2012.
