Irish Potatoes

Lots of interesting film news broke this week that I just didn't have time to get to so..here it is...

-The first footage from Tarsem's Ancient Greek epic "Immortals" will debut at this year's WonderCon says THR


-"There won't be a sequel  to"The A-Team" star Bradley Cooper told Empire "I loved it too. But unfortunately, outside of you, a few of your friends and myself, there just wasn't enough revenue to supply a second instalment of that franchise"

-Alhough he was obviously cast months ago, it's only now been revealed which role Derek Luke will play in the upcoming "Captain America: First Avenger" says Blackfilm Luke will play Gabe Jones, an original member of the elite Howling Commandos combat squad of World War II. In the comics  Jones was the first African-American to serve in an integrated unit and a close confidante to Sergeant Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Jones would later join Fury as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

-Marvel Studios is also developing a film adaptation of the comic book "The Inhumans" reports Bad Ass Digest.The Inhumans are a race of superbeings who live on the dark side of the Moon and were created by the alien Kree millions of years ago in experiments on primitive humans

-Universal Pictures' is planning to reboot "The Wolfman" yet again despite the recent big budget feature underwhelming both critically and commercially reports Bloody Disgusting.The project is out to writers for what's being called "a period piece reboot" of George Waggner's classic 1941 film starring Lon Chaney Jr.We will NOT see this version in theaters though as it will go the "direct-to-disc franchise" route The 2010 version did kinda suck

-Summit is in negotiations to pick up the film rights to action comic book "Crosshair" from Top Cow Productions and Mandeville says Heat Vision. The story follows a former CIA assassin-turned-suburban dad who must race against the clock to stop a program inside his brain from turning him into an unstoppable killing machine out to assassinate the President. Morgan Foehl is will write the script. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman ("The Fighter") are attached to produce

-There's now a bidding war over the rights to finance a "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" movie reports Vulture

-Award-winning writer Neil Gaiman has signed on to pen English scripts for a big-budget series of 3-D enhanced films based on "Journey to the West" says The Hollywood Reporter.

-Lionsgate is currently fielding pitches for "Cube 3D" reports STYD. Vincenzo Natali's cult 1997 (gosh has it really beeen 14 years!) sci-fi/horror thriller follows a group of strangers who are confined to a giant prison made up entirely of cubic rooms that resemble each other. Most contain a lethal device and as the group try and work their way to the entrance, not all of them will survive.One sequel and one prequel were produced and released on DVD. It's not yet clear if this project is either a sequel or remake of the original, but it will get a theatrical. debut

-Hit Australian sitcom duo "Kath and Kim" are headed to the big screen with "The Kath and Kim Filum", says The Sydney Morning Herald. The news comes a decade after the show's launch in Australia and three years after the failed American remake of the show began on NBC in 2008.

-Gale Anne Hurd's Valhalla Motion Pictures has picked up Chris Bullett's spec script "The Nameless" says Heat Vision. The story is set in a top-secret facility operated by the U.S. Marshal's Federal Witness Protection Program housing witnesses awaiting new identities.

-Scott Rudin is set to produce the Martin Scorsese-directed "Sinatra" biopic at Universal Pictures reports Deadline.

-20th Century Fox has picked up the screen rights to Matthew Quirk’s first novel "The Five Hundred" reports Deadline. Described as a more political-themed version of John Grisham’s "The Firm" or a less supernatural "Devil's Advocate", the story follows Mike Ford, a young Harvard Law student who is recruited by a powerful PR/ consulting firm in DC. The firm's founder, a man with connections to the five hundred most powerful people in politics, becomes his mentor. It isn’t long however before Ford begins to suspect that he may have sold his soul to the proverbial devil.

-Vin Diesel has done a brief video update his official Facebook page  in which he and director David Twohy talk about the proposed third film featuring Diesel's famed anti-hero character Riddick.

-Vince Vaughn is attached to star in the upcoming comedy "The Insane Laws" reports The Hollywood Reporter.Jeremy Garelick ("The Break-Up") penned the script and will make his directorial debut on the project  Partially based on events from Garelick's life, the story centers on two best friends whose lives are turned upside down when one man's son impregnates the other's daughter. Neal H. Moritz is attached to produce.


-Summit Entertainment, Participant Media and Imagenation Abu Dhabi are teaming for a film about the the oil-rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico reports THR

-The Montecito Picture Co. has picked up Jeff Lowell's spec script "Monsters of the Midway" says Heat Vision .Plot details are being kept hushed but the tone is described as an action comedy with supernatural overtones that's set in a carnival.

-GK Films has acquired the feature film rights to the "Tomb Raider" video game franchise and will reboot the series with an aim for a 2013 release says.THR


-Filmmakers Brad Furman  and Darren Aronofsky will team up for "Intricate" reports The Los Angeles Times. Set in 1990's New York City, the film is the true story of a highly touted college basketball recruit whose involvement in drug dealing leads him on a downwards spiral after his sporting career doesn't pan out. At that time, the New York narcotics trade is rife with violence and connections to the exploding  rap industry.

Amazon posted early info for the Blu-ray release of the extended editions of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. No date is specified for release other than circa 2011/2012. The price tag is currently set at $84.



-Mark Ruffalo is set to play legendary jazz pianist Joe Albany in the independent film "Low Down" reports Variety.

-Danny Huston will join the kidnapping thriller "Medallion" for Nu Image/Millennium Films reports The Playlist.

-Ron Underwood will helm the ski team comedy "Woodchucks" says Risky Biz Blog.

-Winter's Bone" and "X-Men: First Class" star Jennifer Lawrence is circling the lead role of Katniss in "The Hunger Games" says THR
