Director Fernando Meirelles, perhaps most famous for directing the 2005 Oscar winner The Constant Gardener, looks to helm a biopic about shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, simply titled Onassis. It’s currently set up for distribution under Pathe.
Vulture relays that the film will derive from Nemesis: The True Story of Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O, and the Love Triangle That Brought Down the Kennedys, the popular book from Peter Evans. Apparently Meirelles envisions the film being like The Godfather, with the titular tycoon at the helm of it all.
It definitely sounds like a fascinating project, and if it goes in the direction I think it will, casting will be done for opera legend Maria Callas and First Lady Jackie O. Kennedy. Question is: who’ll end up playing them?
Onassis already served as the topic for the 1988 telefilm Onassis: The Richest Man in the World, which won Jane Seymour a Primetime Emmy Award.
