When Suzanne Collins’ acclaimed and wildly popular book series The Hunger Games began the process of becoming a film, many semi-popular and popular young stars entered the casting fray for the highly coveted roles. The most notable was that of lead Katniss Everdeen; Oscar nominee ended up getting that role over fellow nominees Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld, and a bevy of other young actresses.
However, that’s not the case with The Seventh Son, an adaptation of the Joseph Delaney book called The Spook’s Apprentice. Relative unknowns Alicia Vikander and Sam Claflin are negotiating to play Alice and Tom, respectively, according to Variety.
This makes perfect sense, as Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges and Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore are both negotiating for roles in the film as well. We don’t need an overload of recognizable names; it’d be nice for this film to serve as a platform for these young artists to break through.

“A wonderful and terrifying series by a new writer about a young boy training to be an exorcist. Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son and has been apprenticed to the local Spook. The job is hard, the Spook is distant and many apprentices have falled before Thomas. Somehow Thomas must learn how to exorcise ghosts, contain witches and bind boggarts. But when he is tricked into freeing Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the County, the horror begins..”
Claflin hasn’t done much of note just yet, but he does have a role in the upcoming blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Same goes for Vikander. Though she’s not on the radar now, she’s appearing in a film that famed/infamous (take your pick) director Lars von Trier co-wrote called A Royal Affair; it’s slated for an early release in Denmark next year, but it currently doesn’t have a date of release here in the States.
