J..Lo picked a good weekend to get back on the big screen. Whether the actress-singer picked the right film remains to be seen.
CBS Films' Jennifer Lopez starrer "The Back-Up Plan" looks like the strongest wide release hitting multiplexes Friday, with Warner Bros.' action pic "The Losers" tracking a tad behind. But neither is likely to top the weekend boxoffice.
Lopez most recently appeared in the 2006 music drama "El Cantante" before taking a few years off for child-rearing. The PG-13 "Plan" was directed by TV helmer Alan Poul ("Big Love") and co-stars Alex O'Loughlin ("White Out") in a romantic comedy about a couple's pregnancy-entangled relationship.
"It's definitely a chick flick," CBS Films distribution topper Steven Friedlander said. "But in terms of its opening, the tracking over the past few weeks has shown to be less of a science than it once might have been. In any event, there's no doubt that the real strength of a movie like this will be in its second weekend, as Jennifer Lopez movies historically have tended to play well longer."
Tracking data suggests that "Plan," CBS Films' sophomore effort, will bow no higher than the low-teen millions.
In the PG-13 "Losers," Sylvain White ("Stomp the Yard") directs an ensemble cast featuring Idris Elba, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Jason Patric and Zoe Saldana.
Co-produced by Warners' DC Entertainment and Joel Silver's Dark Castle, "Losers" is based on a DC comic book series about a fictional World War II fighting force. Fanboys and urban demos represent areas of support for the pic, produced for an estimated $31 million-$34 million.
"Losers" should ring up $10 million-$12 million through Sunday.
Given their projected openings, "Plan" and "Losers" can plan on losing the race for No. 1 to a holdover.
Lionsgate's action comedy "Kick-Ass" and DreamWorks Animation's leggy "How to Train Your Dragon" finished first and second last weekend with $19.8 million and $19.6 million, respectively.
Lionsgate is eager to demonstrate playability for its R-rated romp, but some expect "Kick-Ass" to fade quickly despite its decent start. So "Dragon" appears the best bet to top the frame, as the Paramount-distributed pic is still breathing b.o. fire thanks to continued traction with family audiences and the popularity of 3D pics.
Also this weekend, the Disneynature documentary "Oceans" looks likely to fetch single-digit millions through Sunday after unspooling Thursday in 1,206 locations to coincide with Earth Day celebrations...
