The story is based on the popular six-issue mini series "Extremis" by Warren Ellis--the film's events take place after The Avengers. The plot involves the spread of a virus through nanobots and Pearce would play geneticist Aldrich Killian, the co-creator of the Extremis technology which Iron Man adopts after Killian sells it to terrorists.
Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson and the recently cast bad guy Ben Kingsley star.
Production kicks off in May in North Carolina.
