Willem Dafoe will play Peter Van Houten in the film adaptation of author John Green's young adult novel The Fault in Our Stars. Green revealed the news himself via Twitter.
The story follows Hazel ("The Descendants" co-star Shailene Woodley) a sixteen-year-old cancer patient, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group. She soon meets and falls in love with seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), an ex-basketball player and leg amputee.
Van Houten is a reclusive, ornery, alcoholic author whose book, An Imperial Affliction about a cancer stricken girl, captivates Hazel
Laura Dern will play Hazel's mom. True Blood's Sam Trammell plays Hazel's Dad in the film. Nat Wolff has won the pivotal role of Isaac-a close friend of Augustus who is responsible for bringing him to the teenage cancer support group where Augustus and Hazel first meet. Comedian Mike Birbiglia plays the role of Patrick the adult leader of the teen cancer support group.
Filmmaker Josh Boone, whose film Stuck In Love made a splash at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, has the job of directing the film. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber wrote the adapted screenplay.
Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce the pic.
Production is underway in Pittsburgh.
In "Divergent" Woodley and Elgort play siblings--and it's slated for release on March 21, 2014.
