PHOTO: Don Cheadle In "Miles Ahead"

The first official photo for the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead aka Kill The Trumpet Player. EW premiered the picture.

The movie focuses on a single five year period in Davis' life which saw him pull back from music and navigate a fraught relationship with first wife Frances Taylor Davis (Emayatzy Corinealdi). It also chronicles a few dangerous days in Davis (Don Cheadle)’ life when he teams up with a Rolling Stone journalist (Ewan McGregor) to hunt down a stolen recording intended to reignite his career.

Cheadle makes his feature film directorial debut here. He wanted to make the film because it's different from other movies of its kind:

"I had done several other quote-unquote biopics and was always struck by the limitations they presented, because they were trying to be historically accurate. Let's be honest, any biopic is a series of omissions and conflations of events and amalgamations of characters. And you're trying to have a movie experience under three hours, so in the process you condense people's lives from cradle to grave, so things tend to feel episodic and event-oriented as opposed to a story about people and relationships and a character. So I didn't want to do another biopic. When I heard the idea, from various people who had played with him, producers, writers, that this could potentially be something, I thought, if the script is great I would be open to it since he's always been a fascinating figure to me.'"

Keith Stanfield ("Short Term 12") will play Junior, an edgy but impressionable trumpet player involved in the theft. Boardwalk Empire's Michael Stuhlbarg also stars.

Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson penned the script.

Cheadle Daniel Wagner, Robert Ogden Barnum Darryl Porter Vince Wilburn Jr, Lenore Zerman and Pamela Hirsch will produce the pic

Herbie Hancock is the musical supervisor.

Production began this week in Cincinnati.
