The suits at Sony Pictures want James Vanderbilt to write both a 5th and sixth "Spider-Man " reports Variety!?
Vanderbilt, who penned the first draft of the script for Spider-Man 4 , will pen the interconnecting storyline that makes up the fifth and sixth film.
Spidey helmer Sam Raimi didn't like all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but executives at Sony and Marvel clearly want to shorten the gap between "Spidey" and his big screen exploits which has been getting longer with each installment--rather taking a page from Twilight and Harry Potter,
The idea of an interconnected storyline, first suggested for the fourth and fifth film, was scrapped in favor of a fourth stand alone with the original cast and Raimi on board. Raimi then brought in David Lindsay-Abaire and then later Gary Ross to re-write Vanderbilt's fourth film script.
With the rehiring of Vanderbilt, it seems the sprawling idea for the fourth film will continue to be developed for the fifth and sixth and could be used for a reboot if stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and Raimi pass on the idea of a further commitment.
While I'm glad their resurrecting Vanderbilt's idea--which has me--I will admit-curious...
Unless the long term plan is solid--My concern is that rushing comic book sequels is never a good idea and could backfire...
Production on "Spider-Man 4" will begin early next year for a May 6th 2011 release.
