The New Superman Is...
It's official-Henry Cavill will play Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming Zack Snyder-helmed Superman: Man of Steel says a Press Release!!
Cavill (The Tudors "Whatever Works," "Stardust") came close to winning the role in "Superman Returns" when McG was in charge but ultimately missed out when Bryan Singer took over and cast Brandon Routh
THR says that Cavill's closest competitor this time was Matthew Goode, another British actor who was one of the stars of Snyder's Watchmen comic book movie (he played genius entrepreneur Ozymandias.) Goode was also in contention for the title role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and is said to have taken himself out of that race in order to focus on Superman. The role of Abe went to Benjamin Walker late last week
The studio and the producers auditioned actors in Los Angeles, New York, and London in November and December, with someone in the 28- to 32-year-old range as the ideal candidate. In addition to Cavill and Goode, among those who met or were under consideration were Matthew Bomer, “The Social Network” star Armie Hammer, Joe Manganiello (scheduling with True Blood was a factor) and The Rite's Colin O'Donoghue
Cavill was invited for a callback in January, where he met Snyder face-to-face for the first time, according to a source.
The final decision came down last week, and the Nolan secrecy machine was in such force that only a handful of execs knew the choice. In fact, many top studio suits found out only after Cavill had been called Sunday morning.
Snyder:, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."
The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Nolan and Deborah Snyder will produce the reboot
A December 2012 release is planned....
Since Cavill came close before I guess it's good news that he will wear the cape Right? Why am I not more excited by this news?...To be continued....
