“Dragonriders of Pern” Gets a Film Adaptation

Anne McCaffrey has made an indelible impact in the world of science-fiction writing with her award-winning series Dragonriders of Pern since she began writing them in 1968. As is the case with most iconic and adored literary works, there’ll soon be a film adaptation of the series, which “focuses on an elite group of warriors who take to the skies on the backs of giant, fire-breathing dragons with telepathic powers, as they to save the exotic planet of Pern from a terrifying airborne menace.”

Deadline Hollywood reports that David Hayter (X-Men, Watchmen) will write the film’s script; the film looks to be a production between Angry Films, Copperheart Entertainment, Dark Hero Studios, and Entertainment One.

I’ve never read the books, but the premise sounds like it could make for a fun science-fiction film.

However, studios seem very quick to jump the gun on adaptations and more cautious when considering original ideas. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it were the opposite in Hollywood?
