Ridley Scott: No Superheroes; He May Chart Blade Runner 2!!
Out promoting Friday's Biblical epic "Exodus: Gods and Kings" director Ridley Scott explained to IGN why he has not helmed a comic book based film and likely never will:
"I've had a lot of opportunities and I tend not to do that. They're the hardest single thing to write. Taking a comic strip character is very hard to write. Because comics are meant to work in one page, to work in frames with minimalistic dialogue. And a lot of it is left to the imagination of the reader. To do that in film you've got to be a little more explanatory. And that requires a good screenplay and good dialogue."
Meantime a recent trade story on Scott seemed to suggest that he would NOT call action on the Blade Runner Sequel.
During a new interview with Yahoo, he clears up some of the confusion by saying that he hasn't made a decision about doing it yet:
"I don't know about [not directing 'Blade Runner 2'] yet. The script is very, very good. Very good. I wouldn't know [what sort of director we'd want]. It's a hard one to track because it's a very personal piece of my work. ['Blade Runner'] may be one of the most personal pieces I did. I got so beaten up for it, I said I'd never try that again. But here we are. It's sitting there ready to be made."
Original "Blade Runner" co-scribe Hampton Fancher had been at work on the script for new film. Scott Z. Burns was in talks to write the script at one point. Now Green Lantern co-writer Michael Green has been hired to take on the job of reworking the script
Fancher and David Peoples adapted the script for the 1982 sci-fi classic based upon author Philip K. Dick's story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Recently Scott indicated that the script is done and he confirms Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard character is a part of the action.
Scott will produce the film with Broderick Johnson, Andrew Kosove, Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin. Production will take place sometime next year.
Scott is gearing up for cameras to roll on "The Martian" which will take up much of his time next year and then he moves on to Prometheus 2 in late 2015/early 2016.
