DreamWorks has won life rights to the story of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and already has plans to expedite a biopic according to Variety.
This is a big deal...It marks the first film to be authorized by King's estate and gives the producers the right to utilize King's intellectual property. King copyrighted his speeches, books and famous works during his lifetime.
The goal is to create a "definitive portrait of his life" that will probably cover everything through to his assassination in 1968 in Memphis.
Steven Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones will produce.
Spielberg told Variety, "We are all honored that the King Estate is giving us the opportunity to tell the story of these defining, historic events. It is our hope that the creative power of film and the impact of Dr. King's life can combine to present a story of undeniable power that we can all be proud of."
Who will play Dr. King is going to be a toughie--Denzel Washington? Forest Whitaker? They have both given electric performances in biopics before...Ving Rhames?...
Spielberg and co will do this one like no one else can and it will be a fine companion piece to 2011's Lincoln...
