More Frames Per Second?

Douglas Trumbull worked on the iconic science-fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey, but he hasn’t been at the helm of a film since Brainstorm in 1983. Now he looks to do something else in the industry that’s revolutionary.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Trumbull will “direct a 3D feature using higher frame rates”. This will be the first film for Magnetar Productions, a production company Trumbull himself just formed; he’s currently finishing up the script.

For this film Trumbull wants to use ShowScan Digital, where 60 frames per second can be embedded for aesthetic purposes, even with filming the normal 24 frames per second.

Though it’ll interesting to see how much further technology can takes the filmmaking process, there’s too much emphasis on the digitizing and visual aspect of things. Despite what some might think, people don’t just want movies that can impress them on a visual level, they also want stories that they can relate to and admire. If Hollywood simply focused more on the stories being used in film, then we might not have to deal with dilemmas such as these.

How do you feel about this new filmmaking technology?
