Smurf-tastic!

Box Office Update: 'Cowboys & Aliens' Pulls Narrowly Ahead of 'Smurfs'

The weekend actually saw assumed winner Cowboys & Aliens get Smurfed by The Smurfs in a TIE!!  And rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love settles for 5th place...

Pamela McClintock of THR:

In one of the biggest box office upsets in recent memory, Sony’s 3D kids pic The Smurfs tied with DreamWorks/Universal’s Cowboys & Aliens for No. 1 in North America, with each pic estimating a $36.2 million opening. The winner won’t be decided until Monday morning.

Heading into the weekend, Cowboys held a wide lead over the competition in tracking, with Universal predicting a debut close to $45 million. The disappointing launch means the film—directed by Jon Favreau and costing $163 million to produce after rebates—will need especially strong legs.

Smurfs, costing $110 million to make, was only expected to open in the $25 million to $30 million range. The movie’s standout performance is a sizeable victory for Sony Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, which partnered on the CGI/live-action hybrid, as well as for Sony chairman-CEO Michael Lynton, who picked up the project out of turnaround from Paramount.

Steve Carell-Ryan Gosling comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, the weekend’s other new entry, placed No. 5. The PG-13 comedy opened to a solid $19.3 million, largely on the strength of older females. Slightly more than 70% of the audience was over the age of 25, while 64% were females.

Cowboys, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, played even older, likely explaining why the film underperformed. It also wasn’t helped by a B CinemaScore (Smurfs received an A-; Crazy Stupid Love, a B+). Of those turning out for Cowboys, 75% were over the age of 25—and 39% over the age of 50.

Playing older was always a risk, considering the film is a blend of two genres: Westerns, which skew older, and sci-fi.

Cowboys couldn’t have better pedigree. Stacey Snider and Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks oversaw production and co-financed the $163 million pic with Universal and Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment also produced the film.

The film’s financial success will depend upon good legs and a top performance overseas, where it is rolling out slowly.

Smurfs cost $110 million to produce, and is the latest entry in the CGI/live-action market. The pic received an A- CinemaScore, and A among moviegoers under the age of 18.

This was a unique and fresh concept, and Universal was always committed full-board to the project,” Universal president of domestic distribution Nikki Rocco said.

The movie’s financial risk was spread out, with DreamWorks putting up 50% of the budget, and Universal and Relativity each putting up 25%.

Cowboys hasn’t begun rolling out overseas, where it will need to be a strong performer. Generally speaking, high-concept films can do big business at the international box office.

One reason cited for Smurfs’ surprising strength is the nostalgia factor.

Based on the comic books and wildly popular 1980s television show, Smurfs stars was directed by Raja Gosnell, and star Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays and Hank Azaria. The voice cast is led by Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry and Anton Yelchin.

There was a of smurf love going lot on. And there’s no doubt a nostalgic pull,” said Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer.

While the 3D toon received an A- CinemaScore overall, moviegoers under the age of 18 gave it an A. Of those buying tickets, 65% were families, while 35% were general moviegoers. Within the family demo, 40% were parents of kids under the age of 12. The 3D market also was relatively strong for the film, with 45% of the grosses coming from 3D theaters...

Meta Hulk

Have you been curious about how Mark Ruffalo's version of The Hulk will look in May 4th's "The Avengers"?

Marvel President Kevin Feige talked to Hero Complex about that and explained how the design differs from the way the character was rendered for  those Eric Bana and Ed Norton incarnations..

Feige says "He’ll be about the same size he was in 'The Incredible Hulk' [9 feet tall] or maybe a little bit smaller. His muscles won’t be quite as cut. We figure he’s been the Hulk now for a few years and his physique is changing. He’s not as cut or as ripped as he was in 'The Incredible Hulk.' The most important thing is that face. As you can already see in that concept painting, it is — more than any Hulk that’s ever been done in live action — a Hulk that let’s you see the actor in there. You will be able to see Ruffalo in there."

Feige admits the previous approach avoided portraying Hulk's face like the actor-a decision that he and the company "came to question".

Feige says "we did a few designs that put Ruffalo into it, and we immediately saw how much more you feel for the creature. When you keep that connection going between Banner and the Hulk and you have characters around him trying to reach Banner inside."

Hemsworth Talks Branagh & Thor 2

"Thor" star Chris Hemsworth told The L.A. Times that he's "really disappointed" that first film director Kenneth Branagh has opted not to take the helm on the sequel Thor 2

Ken built that character, and everything I know about the Thor world I learned while shoulder-to-shoulder with Ken… As long as he’s happy, that’s the thing"

Branagh was invited back to call action for the follow up since the first pic has grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, and he seemed ready to do just that. However it now seems the rush to get the film out by Summer 2013 lead to his exit

Hemsworth adds "I learned so much from Ken while we built [the first film], so at least I had that time with someone like that. The start of anything creative is the most important period in a way. That’s when the most can go wrong, and Ken made sure we got it right.”

The first film hits disc September 13th

Summer Blues

This weekend director Jon Favreau returns to the summer fray as he mixes genres with Cowboys & Aliens (reviews): The Smurfs (reviews) go from 2-D cartoon and hit the reel world: And Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling and the great Emma Stone discover Crazy, Stupid, Love (reviews)

Pamela McClintock of THR

It’s an understatement to say there’s something for everyone at the domestic box office this weekend, especially if you live on either coast.

Three films open nationwide: big-budget tentpole Cowboys & Aliens, PG-13 comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love and 3D kids pic The Smurfs. Ten independent films open in limited runs in New York or L.A., including Attack the Block, The Devil's Double, The Future and The Guard.

Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, is widely expected to win the weekend with an opening north of $40 million. DreamWorks and Universal are partners on the Western/sci-fi hybrid, which cost $163 million to make after tax rebates.

Stacey Snider and Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks oversaw production on the movie, with Spielberg serving as executive producer. Favreau has been promoting the movie 24/7, including a barrage of events at Comic-Con last weekend, and guest directing an edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live this week.

Universal is releasing Cowboys in North America, while Paramount is distributing the movie overseas. DreamWorks, Universal and Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media financed the pic.

Comparisons are difficult, considering Cowboys’ unique marriage of genres. Earlier this summer, Paramount’s original pic Super 8, directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Spielberg opened to $35.5 million, although that movie cost far less to make.

Cowboys is tracking best among males, although interest has picked up among older women in recent days. Males over 25 are the strongest demo, followed by their younger brethren, according to tracking. The film is receiving mixed reviews overall.

Conversely, Warner Bros.' Crazy Love --- pairing Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling -- should play best to female audiences. Also starring Emma Stone and Julianne Moore, the film is expected to open in the high teens.

Box office observers will be watching closely to see whether the impressive winning streak of R-rated comedies this summer will extend to a PG-13 comedy. Some box office observers believe Crazy Love movie has a shot at crossing $20 million in its opening weekend.

In Crazy Love, Carell’s character, facing divorce, becomes the wingman to a 30-plus player (Gosling). Soon however, the player finds himself unexpectedly falling in love, while Carell’s character discovers it’s not so easy to change his ways.

Sony’s The Smurfs is the latest CGI/live-action hybrid to hit the big screen. Costing $110 million to produce, the kids pic should gross in the mid-$20 million range.

Based on the comic books and wildly popular 1980s television show, The Smurfs stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays and Hank Azaria. The voice cast is led by Jonathan Winters, Kate Perry and Anton Yelchin.

Sony believes the kids movie will have strong legs throughout August.

There's also several strong holdovers, including Paramount and Marvel Studios' Captain America: The First Avenger, which opened to $65.1 million last weekend and could beat Smurfs for No. 2...

Lost Symbol Loses Howard As Director

Ron Howard will NOT be directing the film adaptation of author Dan Brown's latest Robert Langdon novel The Lost Symbol reports Deadline.

A source tells the site that “Ron told [studio suits] Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton that he was not going to be directing Dan Brown’s novels anymore. He just didn’t want to do that thing over and over, the same character and the same stories.”

Howard directed both the 2003 movie adaptation of The Da Vinci Code that made $758 million worldwide, and the follow-up film Angels & Demons (which Brown had actually written first) made a considerably lower $486 million.

Howard says he would still like to produce the film and will help find the  new director.

At last report The Lost Symbol movie was being adapted by Oscar-nominated writer Steven Knight

There's no word whether series star Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Langdon either --who, in this latest tale, is summoned to Washington to decode the symbols of the Freemasons.

Meh The books were sooo much better than the filns anyway--losing Howard is no biggie as far as I'm concerned
