Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes Moving Ahead After All

Constantin Films will now move ahead with plans to produce the sequel The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes after all....This reverses the studio's decision in September after the big screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's first book in the supernatural novel series The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones had such a lackluster launch late in the summer.

Work had begun on "Ashes" even before the first film was released. Filming was scheduled to begin late last month. "Bones" has earned just $100 million worldwide from a $60 million production and a $60 million marketing budget.

Constantin is determined and is pushing film #2 with a hoped production start early next year.

The studio's head of film Martin Moszkowicz tells THR:

"The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going. It's been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles. We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film, particularly with the positioning and marketing, and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise (for City of Ashes)."

"Instruments" centers on Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a Shadowhunter who battles demons including vampires and werewolves. City of Ashes --With her mother in a coma and her father hell-bent on destroying the world, Fray is dragged deeper into New York’s terrifying underworld of werewolves, demons and the mysterious Shadowhunters. Discovering the truth about her past was only the beginning. Now the fate of the world rests on Clary’s shoulders, but can she master her new-found powers and control her feelings for a boy (Jamie Campbell Bowerwho can never be hers?

Sigourney Weaver was in talks to play the ruthless leader of the Shadowhunters who would stop at nothing to destroy the man who killed her son.

Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan, Jemima West and Jonathan Rhys Meyers were due to return to play their respective roles as well.

Harald Zwart was supposed to helm the sequel using a script by Jessica Postigo.

Robert Kulzer and Don Carmody would produce the sequel.

A film adaptation of the spin-off called The Mortal Instruments: Infernal Devices was also in the works at the studio.
