The Mortal Instruments: "Ashes" Sequel On Hold

Constantin Films has announced that it will hold off plans to produce the sequel The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes,

This, after the big screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's first book in the supernatural novel series The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones had such a lackluster launch late in the summer.


The sequel was set to begin production next week, but the first installment has taken in less than $30 million domestically, on a production budget of $60 million.

Constantin Film has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of City of Ashes was a decision we did not take lightly,” producer and Constantin suit Martin Moszkowicz, said in a press release.

After speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place.”

He added: “While taking Cassandra Clare’s vision to the screen we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise.”

"Instruments" centers on Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a Shadowhunter who battles demons including vampires and werewolves. City of Ashes --With her mother in a coma and her father hell-bent on destroying the world, Fray is dragged deeper into New York’s terrifying underworld of werewolves, demons and the mysterious Shadowhunters. Discovering the truth about her past was only the beginning. Now the fate of the world rests on Clary’s shoulders, but can she master her new-found powers and control her feelings for a boy (Jamie Campbell Bowerwho can never be hers?

Sigourney Weaver was in talks to play the ruthless leader of the Shadowhunters who would stop at nothing to destroy the man who killed her son.

Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan, Jemima West and Jonathan Rhys Meyers were due to return to play their respective roles as well.

Harald Zwart was supposed to helm the sequel using a script by Jessica Postigo.

Robert Kulzer and Don Carmody would produce the sequel.

A film adaptation of the spin-off called The Mortal Instruments: Infernal Devices was also in the works at the studio.
